Spring marks the time for getting your health back on track. With beach season around the corner, many go into panic mode imagining the prospect of squeezing into a bathing suit you bought for your “new size.” Zone can help. As a new mom to a four-month old, keeping healthy, let alone getting “beach ready,” sounds about as attainable as getting my newborn Lukas to clean his baby bottles.

Let’s talk nutrition. When I was pregnant, I increased myprotein intake by 10 grams per meal with a corresponding increase of carbohydrate and fat. But now that Lukas is here (and I’m nursing), it’s down to 5 extra grams to replenish my milk supply. That’s still a lot to add, and easier said than done when you’re going through your first months as a new mom with one hand tethered to your baby. As my Mom would affectionately say to my Dad, "Get real, Barry."

Today, it’s a bit easier to stay in the Zone, thanks to the creation of our Zone PastaRx. You haven’t heard of it? Well, in an effort to stay on the current trend of convenient eating, my Dad devised a cooking technique called “molecular baking” which is a patented process that replaces excess carbohydrate compounds from bread and pasta products with high quality protein. So a bowl of pasta, which would usually put you to sleep and pack on the pounds, is now an easy, Zone compliant meal.

As my Dad says, “Zone PastaRx is meant to be like dietary training wheels for a person until they understand the way their body should feel after a hormonally balanced meal.” For my purposes, it’s really helped this new mom stay healthy with minimal effort, which in turn, keeps Lukas healthy.

Now, as easy as it sounds to boil water, I find myself with barely any time. So I’ll make a triple-batch and refrigerate it until I have a free moment to reheat. If I’m reheating the Orzo or Fusilli on the fly, (like during one of Lukas’ naps, where the constant threat of him suddenly waking like a hibernating baby Godzilla looms), I’ll toss a batch of the pasta (about 1 cup) with some Zone Extra Virgin Oil, throw it in the oven for 15 minutes at 350°, and sprinkle a handful of grated Parmesan. If I have the time to reheat with fancier ingredients, like when my husband gets home from work and takes over supervising Lukas, I’ll whip up the Zone Paella (see recipe in The Mediterranean Zone).

It’s true I can’t go to the gym as much as before Lukas, but I can still remain in the Zone. These recipes help me avoid ingesting those unhealthy and unneeded calories. In only a few short months, my body is already bouncing back to my prior self. Now that’s a spring step to get excited about!
